Just 1411 left.

Just 1411 left.

Our national animal is fighting for its life.

From around 40,000 at the turn of the last century, there are just 1411 tigers left in India.

If we don’t act now, we could lose this part of our heritage forever.

Speak up, blog, share the concern, stay informed… Every little bit helps.

The only way to stop this mindless slaughter is to educate the villagers dwelling near the tiger habitats.Make them realise the importnce of this magnificient animal.Gir has been a success mainly because of this.
Not to forget the corruption on higher grounds who are making money at the cost of this great beast. A big ROAR for raising the alarm

Its really a great step to save our tiger. but Why they all to be killed? Who are the responsible?
Not anyone… We are the only responsible for this change 40000 to 1411…..

and It’s very surprising that Govern’t not aware for this change……We are only a common people but the NETA’s should take a call.
My massage Is only for those people who have a power to stop this all thing…our gover’t can stop those..

ROAR INDIA ROAR…….ROAR FOR THE TIGERS!!!

I live in bangalore with my husband. I think just wishing that the govt do something is not going to help. Since maximam number of tigers are poached in karnataka, i would really like to visit some tiger sancturies in karnataka and see whats the truth with my own eyes. If there are any animal lovers in the city who would like to join me, please contact me. Thank you.

  5. Nitin says:

All being said about saving our national animal and one of the most beautiful creatures on the planet, TIGER, But what about action. I am not talking about the AD’s, TV commercials or celebrities talking about saving the tigers.
Anyone can talk, but are they really helping this cause move to the pace? What is the progress?
We see and hear news about people paying huge amount and getting our historical things back to our land.
Can someone, powerful and wealthy come forward and help the existing sanctuary or open one for tiger breeding and protection.
What are the forest officials and ministers doing? It really doesn’t bother them I guess, because when a bullet is inserted in a tiger, it’s the tiger who feels the pain, not these people. This is so sad.

  6. Tushar Surve says:

    Hello Indians,

The causes are many solutions are few lets think how to eliminate the culprits. Govt just cant control the jungles with its limited no of staff patrolling hundreds of sq km of jungles without infrastructural facilities, encrochers and villagers kill tigres to save their cattels and families, poachers cant be the one without the locals help. lets find out more reasons and their solution lets think. If possible visit sanctuaries to know the causes

Let us discuss how to increase the number of tigers join me in discussions

This time lets put our foot down and show the world we Indians if come togather can move mountains

  7. Gaurav Pruthi says:

Tiger hunt for skins and reckless urbanization are the things I believe are making our Ecosystem non-adaptable for these cute creatures. Govt. have to take proper steps to curb these and there is also need to talk with countries like china and others regarding their unsatisfiable need for tiger skins otherwise I don’t wish so, but ultimately the tiger count will come from 1411 to 0 …….

  8. Tushar Surve says:

    Hi Indians

I think we should demand intense intelligence inputs on poachers and their supporters and start encounters and shoot outs. This solution was adopted by Mumbai police to stop gangwars, also the reserve forces should be deployed in forest areas to patroll and work closely with forest dept. I am very much sure there are many top leaders and gangsters are involved and this is a organised crime every efforts should be adopted to stop and control curruption and bureaucracy. There is a possibility of involvement of terririst group to destroy natural resources and also to fund the terrorist activities by trade in animal organs. We also cannot rule out the possibliy of local, villagers and encrachers hand in the crime.

I want everyone of us to come forward to make this movement a physical one

  9. Megha Mishra says:

Last yr i went to indias most famous national park and while we were in the forest on an elephant back we heard 6 gun shots. On enquiring, we got to know that a leopard had attacked a woman and hence the leopard was under the gun. It angers me that even though man enters the wild territory of these big cats, the scale of support still tilts towards man.
Tigers are already under the brink of extinction, would other big cats be next?
I appreciate the initiative taken to save the tiger. This cause to save the tigers will pave way to saving many other wild animals…
many national parks have few or no tigers left.
we should change the way tigers are counted. pug marks are outdated. tigers should be radio collared.
also in tibet, tiger skins are worn by people at their cultural events. this should be curbed.
Every step counts. SAVE THE MAGNIFICANT CREATURE- SAVE THE TIGER..!

  10. Sanchit Tyagi says:

Tigers are our National Animal. Not able to save Tigers is like not able to save our nation. We all have to join togeather as One to save the most mystical, numinous creation of God. Govt Of India should make it complusory for all Indians that they have to serve for 2 to 3 months (like compulsory serving army in Iseral). This is the best way to have the country being responsible for our nature.

  11. Archana Choudhary says:

I’m sure that many of us love animals and are capable of taking care of them..the government should give the tigers up for adoption(naturally after careful scrutiny and revision of the surroundings and capability of the person interested)..they could also go for periodic checks and support the adopters by providing facilities for food and medical care.
Or some of the major organisations could come together to create a facility for breeding and upkeeping of tigers…

  12. Mohan says:

Before endeavoring to assert the strand of saving tigers, one needs to recognize that why the real focus is only on tiger? Why not scores of other living entities. Answer lies with the simple fact that Tiger being the apex carnivore not only propagates its majesty in the wild but also ratifies the health of the forest. If the score of tiger is well established in wild, one can easily access the productivity of that particular ecosystem. We need to communicate effectively that saving the tiger is not some middleclass obsession. It is an ecological imperative — by saving the tiger, you are saving the forests. The tiger is merely the symbol. By saving it, we ensure our water security. Similarly, by saving the snow leopard, we save our mountains; when we protect the river dolphin, we save our river systems and many of a same kind. And the protection of this wonderful cat is not only the responsibility of our government rather more is ours as an volunteer individuals we as a whole need to first admit the crisis and act to need accordingly

  13. jagat singh kunadi says:

it is utter rubbish that there are 1411 tigers left in india, seeing the state of corbett national park yesterday where a tv channel showed a cage right in the center of the reserve is indeed alarming and disturbing, its a mockery to see how our forest guards are armed with sticks and out of date weapons as compared to africa and how poorly are they paid ,its again a shame to state that the tiger conservation programme is directly under the prime minister”s office which i beleive is doing nothing to save our national animal ,all the funds which are in millions of rs. to save the tigers are going wasted because we sleep and the money goes in the hands of corrupt officials ,i would like to state one more thing that that other parks and sanctuaries where we can relocate the tigers takes such a long time(decades eg. the darrah sanctuary in kota where now they have plans to relocate the tigers, its an utter shame, they didint take that time to call it rajiv gandhi natioal park disgusting ,its all about politics, now finally i guess they will take one more decade before they introduce tigers there ) had it been any other country things would have gone really fast to save their national animal but indeed this is india,we should learn from africa

  14. says:

We must respect and admire every single person who’s working to save the tiger from extinction. Very commendable. All those forest officers, rangers and environmentalists who are working for a noble cause, hats off to them!!

  15. Chirayu says:

Abhorent poaching of Tigers has lead us to this situation where we are now left with only 10% tigers in comparision to number of tigers in the last century. The last tiger census revieled that we have almost lost the most dynamic cats among all the big cats. It is a slap on the face of government and the people living in India that even though we were aware of continuous decrease in the number of tiger still we couldnt even take necessary steps toward it. “THIS IS IN AN ALARM” by nature to us if we cant do it this time then the generation to come would only see them hanging on wall. I request each and every one of you residing in India to raise your voice and atleast share your concern through Internet.
If you cannot go out and stop poaching of tiger atleast speak about it and help the people who are doing this kind cause. There is lot to speak but space is to small to write. ————-” SAVE SHER KHAN”————-

This was the first operation of its kind in the whole world.
True heroes, who helped shape up the project to save our tigers even before aircel thought of it, are always unsung………

  17. Romil Jain says:

First of all, all private vehicles should be banned in wild life parks. Use of plastics should be banned in those areas. cameras or satellites should be used for monitoring the area wherever possible, so that hunting can be stopped.

  18. Reena says:

At this rate a day will come when just few generations later the babies will need to be shown a film to explain the “Roar or Magnificence of a Tiger”.Tigers will exists for us only in books or over the screens and all around us we shall still be discussing options and blaming the system. What has our education system imparted to us if we cant manage to work out a solution on our own with waiting for support from the brain and concience dead officials or locals who trade the National Pride for few bucks? Why cant we all MBA/engineers/Doctors or anyone of us a group device a fool proof system to save our heritage animal.Instead of working for some financial planning cant our MBA’s help the planning and execution of this , cant our scientists for once divert their attention from developing new neuclear weapons to saving what we already have? Cant we all just gather and initiate a plan and all just give ideas to improvise? So a action plan is made on the blog and then just some execution is left.

    Just tossing around a thought..

  19. Ankur Gaur says:

We really need to get together in huge numbers to produce such a roar that can not go unheard. I really wonder if any of our political leaders sitting right on top have joined in here to save our national animal. I would really not want to see the national animal changing to some other species that hasnt gone extinct yet. 3 simple ways to save this national treasure of ours:
    1) Close all the tiger reserves. Access to be allowed only to limited forest officials selected from renowed dedicated wildlife preservation institutions.
    2) Capital punishment/Death sentance for poachers
    3) Opening and Closing count of tigers to be taken on a fornight basis.

I wonder if my words are being read and being thought of getting implemented. Please remember, at times, we have to take strong steps to face and solve a particular problem…..

  20. peter says:

I strongly believe that the WWF dept should go ahead and try to educate the villagers nearby all tiger resource’s the importance of this animal. Also at this time as we trying give them the best support, the WWF team should go ahead and try to get the opposite sex close and give them proper nourishment so that they can start multiplying themselves…….

so it could become 1411 to 4111 very soon ….and more!!!!

    ROAR THE WAY THEY DO!!!

  21. Surendra Murdia says:

We are just day dreaming. The Govt of india is doingjust lip servicwe. If we really mean to sve our tigers, we hve to change our laws. First we should treat our tigers if not more at least as important as any humanbeing. If killer of a man can be awarded a death sentence then why not a killer of aTiger? Poachers should be punished for murder or attempt to murder. Those who are in possession of Tiger’s Skin or any part of its body they should be punished for abetment to murder. The murder of Tigers should be dealt by Fast Track Courts. The Government dithers in making the Santuries free from human habitat. The highway passing through Sariska can not be clouse because the transporters find the alteernative route longer by few kilometers, or the politicians donot want to please their vote-bank even at the cost of the Tioger. The Govt would not mind sto spend corores for the publicity of save the tiger project but would not increase the number of the forest guards for effective patrolling of the Tiger Sancturies. Col Murdia

  22. Jitendra says:

We are used to now of all these crimes whether it is related to animal or man. We are living in such a democratic country where people love to be corrupted without any fear of law, even all laws, rules and regulations are there in place. Even we pass a law of death sentence who are involved in this business at least they will be alive for 10-15 years untill their turn comes. When we say we are living in a democratic country let citizen of this country decide the punishment not the educated fool. Keep those in zoo and treat them as an animal who are found in this poaching crime. Instead of filling our jails and leting them enjoying meal everyday keep them in zoo under cage tagging them a new species found on earth who is enemy of our mother earth. In this way government of india will be able to earn some money also. Atleast after seeing those other will learn we all have same share on this earth then why kill tigers or other animals let them also enjoy their part. It is request to all please save our tigers they are not our enemy. They all have equal rights to live on this earth with us.

  23. This is the International Year of the Tiger…. but some governments aare still sleeping about the fact of the saving the tiger.

I strongly urge the ignorant governments to please rise up to this occation as we want to see our forest alive with spirit of the jungle- The Royal Bengal Tiger.

  25. Shalini E says:

It is very sad to see our national animal strugglin 2 survive in a country which is full of culture n diversity. we have been worshipin many forces of nature 4m d past many decades. we talk of brotherhod n loving our neighbours then why all these feeling go numb when we talk about wildlife. We have variety of species in our country and we tend to neglect all of them. Tiger had once been the PRIDE of our motherland. but their population is depleting day by day…. national parks n zoos are just seen as a place for pleasure. It is seen that the animals r kept into cages at the zoo but only an animal lover can see the pain in the eyes of all the animals kept there. we all love freedom and fight for it even animals need it but if they try to fight for it the only result they get is spending the rest of their life in a cage or dying strugglin for it.but it is high time that we realise our role and take some initiative in saving OUR NATIONAL ANIMAL. we have to be aware and sensitive towards our wildlife which is in danger because of us…

  26. Samar Zaidi says:

India has lost more than 50 per cent of its tiger population in the past five years with the numbers dwindling to 1,411 from 3,642 in 2001-02, according to the latest tiger census report.
[From the article titled "Over half of tigers lost in 5 years: census" by Aarti Dhar in THE HINDU Online edition dated Wednesday, Feb 13, 2008]

India holds over half the world’s tiger population. According to the latest tiger census report released on February 12, 2008 by the National Tiger Conservation Authority, the current tiger population stands at 1,411 (i.e. ranging between a minimum of 1,165 to a maximum of 1,657). The results include figures from 16 tiger states and are exclusive of Jharkhand and Sunderbans. The state of West Bengal was covered only partially (i.e. North Bengal) during the census.

  27. Mohan from Hassan says:

Enough is already been stated against the conservation of our wounderful national animal. what is most significant effort needed at this point of crisis from the bloggers is? To brainstorm there wit to advise or mandate not only to the concerned authorities but also to every individual …so i request from all of u to voluntarily goahead with ur constructive and responsible ideas so as to check the dwindling score of Tiger so that eventually we may propose the agenda to the Minster responsible who seems to be proactive with this issue

Starting from me… Infatuate the locals or tribles with monetary gifts who give reasonable clues against the possible threat of poaching and even benifit the person who give clue againt the person who carry illegal arms or tools usefull for carrringout such things in there home or vicinity..Even well trained dogs they carry is the potent threat nowadays. so eventually i would advise divide and rule or Educate few, in such a manner in which voluntarily people need to notify u..

  28. Niral Gandhi says:

People having air filled brains only to look at immediate benefits. Only God Help these souls. Never the less we as an individual should keep the fire burning. Until our so called “government” rises and enforces LAW so brutal. This will in turn help burn and destroy at least commercial cause for the kill. I have visited a lot of Tiger reserves in India but what a pity, they get their bread from tourism. Only if government reworks on
    A) improper funding
    B) A new Law, 10 times brutal then TADA act.
    C) Bann on tourism until the Numbers multiply 5 times.
    D) Sure and better ways to keep check on scores.
    E) Employ foreign tiger saving researchers / organizations to take control (There only 5 people in India who can help but only individuals).

….Or if GOD himself appear to save his glory.

  29. Rituja says:

    Small contribution of thoughts -
Its high time we put words into actions and save our national animal-TIGER
Infact the concern and the feeling only comes to you within if people are actually aware about the loss or they lack knowledge, they are simply not aware!
Firstly, Indians should be proud that we have a vast biodiversity in flora & fauna and should know that all of it’s a part of the ecosystem or the Food web in which humans are also a part of…loss of each element is a threat or damage to the entire ecosystem. If we tell people that, if Tigers are dead then there will be floods…i.e. if carnivorous are left the animals on whom they feed are more in number and the most of these are herbivorous who in turn will eat all the vegetation and the plants will not be left on the land which otherwise holds and absorb water and the rain water will not percolate causing floods. Simple explaination all masses should know before doing anything for mother earth.SAVE TIGERS – is not the only issue here, we have to face the next generation, what will we answer them? If they have no resources left for them?
So, let`s all of us take small steps towards safe guarding our lives not nature because nature will find its own way to survive, but save ourselves, save Mother earth! I am sure millions of small contributions from everybody will make a great difference.Lets all become the Environmentalists which will not be considered less than soldiers who protect our country, we will protect Mother earth! Get the roar in you and give home to the Tigers which are left, our countries` asset by giving a helping hand in multiplying them by our joined efforts…

  30. Divyashree Shanbhag (9 years) says:

Our national animal is the tiger
Will it be extinct or a survivor?

Once it was the ruler of the forest
Today we cut trees and it has no home to rest

Once it walked around free without the fear of anyone
Today, it hides with fright from the poacher’s gun

Due to our mistakes the outlook is bad
Only 1411 left, it is really sad

For ways of protecting it, we should look
Or soon it will be seen only in a movie or a book

  31. PSONAK says:

I feel the authorities need to put their act together and tighten their belts. The Royal families still believe in “Shikar”. We see on TV news channels that Tiger skin is being sold in China and most of it comes from India. The Government should enforce a strict ban on all the Shikaris, hunters and poachers. Strict vigil needs to be maintained in the Tiger zones. In this world of Hi-Tech engineering we need to use satellite imagery to monitor the wildlife especially the endangered species and ACT against all those who take the Law in their hands. High profile celebrities get away easily even after killing black bucks. Only God knows when such people will be taken to task.
There should also be a secured Tiger breeding area which will help the population of this wonderful species.

In my childhood in Dooars and lower Terrai sector I had seen dozens of Tigers (Royal Bengals/Leopards) were roaming or passing by at a close distance of me. Those Tigers of North Bengal were not maneaters. Those days have gone… and those Tigers vanished by human hunters. As learnt, there are only 20 Royal Bengal tigers could be located in lowe Terrai/Dooars. Let us unite together and roar to protect the residual numbers believed to be alive.

  34. Venkat says:

We lost one more, it is just 1410.

Planet conversation forms least priority for us. Lets make it priority by contributing some amount from our pockets to WWF.

This will help WWF to strengthen themselves to save our tiger & planet earth

I have donated Rs 500 in Feb. Why are you waiting for?

  35. prabeen says:

    hi all of you
we are here to take concern for the destruction of tigers .it should be stop immediately. serious action must be taken against the culprits.strict measures are to be taken.it is not the matter of one but all the faunas.must required the attention of the govt. on this issue and the people nexus to, should be made responsible and accountable.ground realities should be checked and full proof plans are to be made and implemented.
god please save our national animal.save our pride.

  36. Ritesh Saha says:

    Dear All!
I would like to request you all to please spread the awareness among your friends and relatives the need for saving our National Animal - TIGER.
Not only for the responsibility that we all have towards our national animal but, also due to that fact that Tiger is one of the most crucial animal that keeps the life cyle balance goes on in the environment. Please DONT forget that we are making them homeless with more of deforestation. So we should ROAR LOUD and CLEAR to let these beautiful animal live forever in their natural environment and help us to live safely too. Hope to have a better life for the Tigers.

  37. Shikha Gupta says:

It’s high time that we realize the importance of our national animal. Yesterday only I was teaching my 8 years old about wildlife sancturies and the habitats in that. My child found it so strange that our national animal is dying so suddenly due to some money minded people.
Come on get up… what are we leaving for our next generations? They are going to blame us for all these tiger deaths. They will say why didn’t you saved them then. You are teaching us about extinct animal that you used to say was our national animal.
So people of this generation, stand up for the right cause because tigers need us as much as we need them for our ecosystem. Like every living thing, the tigers also have right to live and we are not allowed at any point to take away their life.

  38. Charudatta says:

    Hi Everyone,
I was overwhelmed by the response but sad for the fact that only 1411 Tigers are left in our country.
In my opinion our target should be the count should not come below 1411 for this year. This can be achieved in many ways as many of us had already suggested in above responses. But I think major resaon for this situation is fast vanisihing habitat suitable for tigers. Tigers are not social as Lions. They have their own areas and dont like it to share with other Tigers. This natural behaviour of Tiger asks for expansion of current sancturies and develope a helthy habitat for Tigers.
Also to mention, this campaign forced Govt. to open a new sanctury for Tigers in Kerala. So lets ROAR loud and ROAR togather so that the government wakes up to concentrate on the issue of Poarching and come up with strict laws that will be implimented for better being of our national Animal. Lets do it for the beautiful animal and our generations to come who shall see the animal in wild and will be proud to see our national animal.

    Regards,
    Charu

  39. Nitin Manghnani says:

The Thing that we could do is try to minimise the population growth as much as possible because we are reducing the forest cover which is indirectly reducing the space left for the tigers to live in. This cannot be achieved by only one person. We need whole India to help to save our TIGERS

  40. vaishali says:

Close the BANDIPUR highway. The tigers are suffering. Lets join hands and save our national animal tiger.

  41. Vaidehi Nene says:

TIGER!! Our pride our national animal!
I was shocked when the figure 1411 hit me while watching one of the aircel adds! They are such magnificent, beautiful, royal creatures that roam the indian lands! They should and must be preserved! Our coming generations shouldnt miss out on creations like them..
But now i realize that all we can do is blog.. thats all that is in our hands!.. Major part’s to be played by the government. All i can suggest is to STOP usage of ANY material made out of animal heed.. from bags to shoes to jackets.. Just say NO to them no matter how lavishing they are.
Secondly media can play a MAJOR role in spreading awareness.. Instead of printing page3 and lifestyles of so and so celebrities they should instead focus on matters like such.
I really really hope this feline is rescued in time..
A BIGG ROAR TO SAVE OUR PRIDE.. OUR TIGERS!!

  43. Jisha Sharma says:

    Hi All,
I don’t need to tell anybody that why I am writing this message here, all of are now very well aware of the fact that our national animal - TIGER is getting vanished and only 1411 left, thanks to aircel for spreading this message across. Its high time guys to stand and speak out against all of those cruel people who are killing our TIGERS. This is our heritage and we are the ones who will be held responsible for its extinction. So, i request all of you to act now before its too late. Start speaking in public, spread the message, do every little bit to SAVE OUR TIGERS.

  44. sneha ghose says:

its very nice to see that finally few people are actually looking upon the national heritage……it has become a routine to see news of tigers being killed by villagers, taming them, killing them for personal pleasures n many more..its is high time that everyone should stand against this…im personally an animal lover so i heartily request every individual to contribute a few moments from their life n be with us in this good cause…..

  45. John CP says:

Hats off to Aircel for it’s initiative to save our national animal. Efforts must be made to bring/educate the poachers to leave this and engage them in protecting/other productive purposes. Stringent punishment should be given to both the sellers as well as buyers of any tiger products like minimum of 15 years imprisonment. It should made as a non-bailable offence and so on. Also steps should be taken up for setting up a national breeding centre so as to protect our national animal from extinction.

  46. says:

Tiger is our national animal, that we all know, but some few know better than us that it is a money making machine. so lets start 20-20 match between few hunters cum bussinessman vs. all indians.

Start analyzise two team:- I know all indians team will win because we have better team like goverment, polytical parties, good buissinessmen, police, people from each proffession and very special ,lot of aircel customer . Other team have only fear, some bad buissinessmen, some bad customer and bad policeman.

So my request to all put your hundred percent to save our national pride.

  47. Mrinal Dey says:

I was delighted to read that few like minded people from Pune went to Katraj and discussed this grim issue of out national animal disappearing. Not only this they held some roadshows to spread the awareness.

I was unfortunate not to take part in the activity but i would really want to appreciate these people and other’s who are really concerned about our national animal.

I was wondering if anyone wants to make a donation, how do we go about it, we really want this to go to the right people so that it is used for the right purpose only.

Also i was thinking if some way we can have tours arranged for common people (in subsidized rates), to the national reserves that will allow all of us to see this magnificent animal and also educate them about their importance in the whole ecosystem. then people would start thinking in the right direction and provide support for this animal. Also this would encourage our national tourism as well. Maybe something that the government needs to chip-in with.
