Just 1411 left.

Just 1411 left.

Our national animal is fighting for its life.

From around 40,000 at the turn of the last century, there are just 1411 tigers left in India.

If we don’t act now, we could lose this part of our heritage forever.

Speak up, blog, share the concern, stay informed… Every little bit helps.

Man… I cant stop being sad after reading this stuff… I have seen and heard about Tigers campaigns, but none shook me like the way “1411” count shook me… The cub TV ad left me with tears rolling! I am 100% dedicating myself in helping this campaign reach all.

Punishment for such poachers have to be severe… and i agree with Asheesh Agrawal, like “Thada” there should be no reasoning or justification for such acts… and one case caught should be traced to the origin as to where the tigers were killed, who all were involved in this breach and the entire gang should be behind bars… No one man is behind such acts… a community of people are supporting or ignoring this… Lets spread awareness and the best of best way to spread awareness is thru severe punishment which puts everyone who is involved into a state of fear!

We should be creating in increasing the number of tigers… Let it be funding the NGOs or feeding tigers in the zoo… Lets be innovative and create ways to increase the tiger counts…

Let us not just type and leave! Lets act and then type.

    hello all,
it is very disgraceful that we are not even capable of providing protection to our national animal, the number is down to 1411. i belong to very small place in madhya pradesh which does include bandhavgarh national park (the tiger territory of India) and yes i read the previous blog itself that it not about just awareness of the local villagers (they do pray tigers),the problem is about those rich idiots who think that killing and hanging the skin of such an elegant creature, and plz guys and gals this is about us only. do you know guys that still there are more 150 tigers in bandhav garh. and it is a place where once a sita tigress gave birth to twelve baby tiger, and it is the only place in the world were first white tiger was ever recognized and was displayed to the world by the king of rewa. i don’t know about others but they do belong to my place.
the slution is very simple that we have to educate the poor villagers that if they suspect anything they must immediately to the concerned authorities and plz the most important thing for fellows is to stop using those product which are made up of tiger skin.

You all would be surprised to know that the figure “1411” is a two year old figure, the fresh one is yet to come.
Lets hope that the current count remains still or more than former (i.e 1411).
Wake up !! and lets donate to keep the campaign alive !

it is undoubtely a very serious issue and we all need to be concerned about it…but the few days back i was thinking that even though the numbers are too less and the government has to do something to protest them…but then i thought cant we do anything to increase their numbers at increasing rate.i think CLONING is an alternate solution for it….im not from a medical field but what i do now is that Cloning in biology is the process of similar producing populations of genetically identical individuals that occurs in nature asexually…so i think our scientists must take serious step regarding this thing too……i know the security prospect comes first but if we scientifically think this can be a boost in increasing the number of tigers

under 1500 tigers in india……..1411 to be precise……..tigers need us. dont take it for granted. 1411 IS a small number. but its not just about tigers……. save our elephants, rhinos, pandas, deer, dogs, cats, whales, vultures…….. please people, dont be selfish. All of them need our help……… and we need them. It’s high time. Just talking wont help……. we’ll have to step forward and help them out…. it’s a shame that we’ve been quite for so long.

talk to your friends, organise meetings, debates, raise funds…….do anything you like, but do it for our dear stripey…….

and next time you do think about hurting an animal or tree without a reason, remember our dear stripey….just once close your eyes see his picture, waiting for his mummy……..

Man is the most intelligent animal……….

    and the most dangerous toooo.

it is my humble request, please listen MJ’s earth song…….
then we may understand what we have done……….. and what we are capable of doing.

P.S.: please use a bicycle whenever possible. I hope that’s something you can really do for nature.
Even mother nature requires our cooperation.

    Hello,

Don’t want say too much. I want to come to the main point that to save our Big Cat need emergency help from Govt. of India. Otherwise common people, any animal lovers association, any Individual etc. etc. can do up to certain point. But by that we just can not save them.
Why!! Because due to our politicians, Top rank officers (IAS, IFS, IPS etc. etc) our forest rangers, forest officers, security people can’t do anything. So we need immediate action like WAR EMRGENCY.

Also note that people those are killing the tigers having more modern weapon than our security guard who has just 303-rifle or only “Lathi”….How can they save the tigers!!

Please Please my humble request to President of India as well as Prime Minister of India to take immediate action.

Let me know if I can do something.

Have you ever imagined if we humans become extinct, what would happen? Believe me our mother earth would take a sigh of relief. Have we ever thought of giving something back to mother nature, instead of just taking from her without even ever being thankful in any way? These questions arrived in my mind only after visiting a tiger reservoir in Madhya Pradesh. I happened to visit that place called Pench on 25th of December last year for tiger safari. I was keeping sick thus i could not make it for the excursions, but my friends went out in the wild jungles just in the hope of catching a glimpse of a tiger. But, unfortunately they weren’t that lucky enough. Why so? Because there aren’t any tigers left in the wild for us to see. I was busy reading about the life and work of Jim Corbett, in my room, trying to understand as to why is it that there are some trying to kill these beautiful wild cats and on the other hand some giving up their lives in the desire to save them?
It is a shame that we just think of growing our human race, but no one actually thinks of doing something productive for the other dwindling species, living and breathing around us. Only about a lac of people showing concern for the remaining 1,411 tigers is not enough. We are the country of maximum population in the world. By just a few people voicing their opinions will not save our tiger population. We need to educate people from the very start that every living species on this earth is as important as we are. They have the right over this earth for space, food, water, air and life as we do. We need to educate the masses specially the uneducated ones that it is high time we stop reproducing and first and foremost think of the ones alive before we give birth to another human. It is not only the tigers but also a number of other animals which are disappearing which we are not aware of right now, but someday we will read about some other animal in the newspapers and then wake up to show our good for nothing concerns.
Man is a social animal it is said in sociology, then why is it that we cannot share our space with our fellow animals. We are suppose to be evolved by an animal species, and today we do not have space for them, shame on this human life for we are the worst living species alive on the face of this earth. We are literally cannibals, or may be even worst than them. Believe me, there will be a time when there won’t be enough food and humans will start hacking each other for want of flesh as food.

  11. Human says:

We always blame the native people living in a jungle for killing the tigers, but never think of reasons they have to do so…. the jungle is their home and if the tiger invades their home and eats away the goats, and other pets from which these people earn their living, killing that tiger is the only option they are left with. Educating these people wont help as hunger always beat conscience.
Besides just pushing the campaign for publicity or brand marketting, the promoters must educate the people with the real root cause and push for the actual solution of the problem

  12. There are very few people who understand the true importance of protecting the tiger. Most people feel it is only a matter of saving an animal that makes a beautiful sight to see. This reason only makes up a fraction of why we need to save this incredible animal. The tiger is at the top of the food chain in the jungles that it roams.

The following is a very basic description of the chaos that would ensue if the tiger became extinct. If this was to happen, the populations of prey species like Spotted deer and Sambhar would burst at the seams. This excessive population would then totally ravage it’s food source - vegetation. If the vegetation in the jungles was devastated, where and how would the insects survive. They may even shift to the crops in farmlands. If the plants in the jungles would be finished, what would refurbish the soil. If the soil was no longer fertile, new plants would not sprout. Over the years, this would probably mean the end of the jungles

The end of jungles also means the end of the biggest suppliers of the oxygen filled air, which we take so much for granted. This is a very simple layman description of what the result of tiger extinction could mean to our own survival. The truly scientific description is even more alarming and drastic.

It isn’t necessary for every one of us to take world-awakening steps. All we have to really do is influence those that are a part of our own lives. Obviously, anyone wanting to do more than that is another breath of fresh air for a dying tiger. There are many NGOs and other organisations that are totally dedicated to protecting the tiger. We will try and, as soon as possible, give you a list on this site of such organisations, which you can contact and lend a hand in tiger conservation.

It is important to realise at the outset, if you are intending to help in this line, that protecting the tiger does not necessarily mean working in operations dealing directly with the tiger. It could easily mean working on assignments dealing completely with villages in Park buffer zones, other animal species, welfare of staff working in reserves, villagers, issues dealing with cattle grazing, etc. The one thing that is common with all these assignments is that they are all directly or indirectly aimed at protecting the jungle and it’s inhabitants, which obviously includes the tiger.

The main thing that requires a mention here is that if you care for the tiger and want to do something about it - the time is NOW. Act - before it’s too late

At least 20 tigers have resurfaced in a tropical rainforest in western India, almost three decades after it was thought that poaching had wiped them out there, experts said on Tuesday. At least 20 tigers have resurfaced in a tropical rainforest in western India, almost three decades after it was thought that poaching had wiped them out there, experts said on Tuesday.

The big cats were sighted over an 800 square kilometer (300 square miles) mountainous forest range in the western state of Maharashtra, bringing rare good news in a country that is rapidly losing its wildlife to poaching and habitat destruction.

“There was good forest cover, an ideal habitat and an ideal prey base but tigers were not sighted in the Sahyadri range since the late 1970s,” Vishwas Sawarkar, former head of the state-run Wildlife Institute of India, told Reuters.

“My estimate is there are at least 20 of them now,” said Sawarkar, adding that the discovery was made during an ongoing nationwide tiger census.

India is believed to have half the world’s surviving tigers, but according to a census in 2001 and 2002, their numbers have dwindled to 3,642 from 40,000 a century ago.

Conservationists say the actual number of tigers is between 1,300 and 1,500, based on the initial findings of the current census due to made public later this year.

No sightings of the big cats led many — including poachers and conservationists — to believe the tigers had been wiped out from the Sahyadri range, an unbroken chain of mountains that stretch along India’s western edge.

Experts said the last remaining tigers could have benefited with poachers moving on to other areas in search of their lucrative prey, whose body parts are used in traditional Chinese medicines and whose skins fetch thousands of dollars.

“Maybe even forest officials and researchers didn’t look there properly,” Sawarkar said. “This may have helped their numbers grow undisturbed.”

Conservationists hope the authorities will now declare Sahyadri a protected tiger reserve.

“Once the tiger reserve is declared, the forest department must be given the necessary means to protect it,” said Rahul Kaul, director of conservation at the Wildlife Trust of India.

“But it shouldn’t be just lip service. We have had enough of that.”

  13. The Tiger is India’s national pride, and a national shame. Termed the country’s National Animal, the Tiger has ceased to be the hunter. Hunted down ruthlessly and butchered by poachers in some of India’s most prestigious tiger reserves, this majestic creature now faces extinction.

In the beginning of the 20th century, there were literally tens of thousands of tigers in Indian jungles. Their numbers began to fall when tiger hunt by Indian kings and nobles, and the ruling British elite became an almost mad sport. People flaunted their tiger skins and stuffed heads as a mark of their shikar prowess.

It was not until Jim Corbett, the legendary-hunter-turned-conservationist, made an impassioned plea to save the tiger, a challenge later taken up by India’s late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, that a semblance of realisation dawned on the nation oblivious to the importance of a national treasure such as the tiger.

Gandhi helped create a number of Project Tiger Reserves in 1973, a year after the Wildlife Act came into force that banned killing of many endangered animal, reptile and bird species. The tiger multiplied during the first decade of its special protection. Today, India has 28 Project Tiger Reserves, but they now find it increasingly difficult to stop the alarming decline of the cat population largely because of poaching for the animal’s organs.

About five years ago, international tiger specialists warned that India was losing one tiger every day to poachers, who sold the animal parts to China and Southeast Asian countries to be used as medicinal elixir. Tiger bones, claws and penises are touted to cure — though scientifically rubbished – particularly problems of male erection and boost physical vitality. The economic development of these regions boosted the demand for these tiger organs, which apart from being the raw material for drugs became dining-table delicacies.

I still remember finding concoctions made from tiger parts in New York’s Chinatown a few of years ago, and they were being sold with brazen openness indicating a thriving illegal trade which invariably originated in India. The cause of India being the focal point of the trade is not far to seek: wild tiger populations have been more or less depleted in most other parts of the world.

But India appears to be doing precious little to check the decimation of its wildlife, and instances of large-scale poaching have been coming to light with sickening regularity. Late last year (2005), the Sariska Project Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan reported that not one of its 26 big cats there could be traced. Early this year (2006), another Project Tiger Reserve, Ranthambhore, also in Rajasthan, faced a similar crisis: the reserve’s figure of 47 tigers has been disputed by wildlife experts, who said that the number could not be more than 15.

It is clear that poaching continues with utter impunity. Raghuvir Singh Shekhawat, Deputy Field Director at Ranthambore, admitted that they had found three series of traps in December 2005.

Wildlife activist Valmik Thapar has said that Ranthambhore did not offer the worst-case scenario. There were at least 12 other Project Tiger Reserves where this majestic beast was being slaughtered. For example, the Buxa Project Tiger Reserve in West Bengal was supposed to have 27 cats, but a recent probe could not find even a single faecal trail or pugmark. The picture was grim all right, Thapar has regretted.

There are many reasons for this state of affairs. A Tiger Task Force, appointed by the Government of India, recently submitted its report, which was illuminative. There is a big shortage of field staff in the Project Tiger Reserves, and the guards are often ill equipped to tackle the evil of poaching. While poachers use sophisticated vehicles, weapons and night-vision glasses, the forest guards find themselves without even proper footwear, let alone firearms.

Even more serious, the conviction rate for wildlife crime in India is abysmally low, hardly ever beyond two percent. The classic case of Bollywood star, Salman Khan, caught killing an endangered black buck – though not a tiger – for amusement and food — though not for commerce – makes an interesting study of India’s legal system. Khan committed the crime some five years ago, and was sentenced by a lower court to five years’ rigorous imprisonment just this April 2006. But he is now out on bail after being incarcerated for merely two nights. He has the right to appeal to a higher court. The question is, will Khan serve time in jail at all?

Another celebrity case was that of India’s cricket legend, Nawab of Pataudi, who was, a few months ago in 2005, caught hunting for sport a deer, also on the list of endangered animals. The case is now going on.

Although no Indian celebrity has yet been found hunting a tiger, men such as Khan and Nawab not only make a mockery of Indian laws, but also appear to be pushing hardcore poachers into believing that the law is ineffective, more so its implementation. And, so poaching thrives, and the poor tiger finds itself landing in someone’s medicine chest or on dining table.

A very good initiative by Aircel collecting the concerns of indians on our Tiger.

It is such a majestic animal, it has to be saved at any cost

Needs more action on the ground and not on the web ..
    Can Aircel Do this

    1. Consolidate and send important comments to the chief of the project tiger and ensure that he
passes on the message to the govt conservators of all the states.

    2. Publish these comments on news papers & local dailies across India so that people know that there is an attempt
made to express the citizens concerns on Tiger

    3. Start sponsoring latest weapons, night vision goggles, other equipment needed to guard our forests to the
forest departments anti poaching squad so that they are geared up for the task. Doing this we show how much we care for tigers.
If you are willing to do this, count me in for my contribution

    4. Start rewarding the forest squad and guards who guard our jungles in some way or the other , show them that we care.

    Lets Do It ..

    Hi everyone!!!

The state highway that passes through the Bandipur National Park used to shut down at 7:00pm but now the Government has kept it open 24/7. After 7:oopm it is the animal time as many animals go in search of prey and wander about on the highway. Since the Government has kept it open the possibility of animals getting killed is higher. Recently 2 elephants died due to a truck accident.

I am really happy with this decisions made by the MAHARASHTRA GOV. to protect tigers . Tiger is India’s national animal, It is a carnivores.
Its color is black and orange, And it eats all herbivoures.

People are killing tiegrs, Tigers are vanishing rapidly.
People are floging their skin, And are happy to earn money.

Tigers are very important part, Of the food chain.
If they will be extinct, There will be nothing for decomposers to gain.

The plants will start sulking, And the food chain will be unstable.
We have to save our tigers, And have to make it able.

Lets start to protect these animals, And see our eco system stay happily.
We will save our national animal, And increase their number to infinity.

I think our wildlife organistions need to become ‘apolitical’…Fully autonomous bodies which are answerable to the centre will be able to function more effectively without a day to day interference from local politicians…Tiger habitats need to be cordoned off so as to protect them from greedy land mafias…Villagers should be educated as their cooperation would be priceless in preventing trespassers and poachers from having easy access to the resorts…Visitors residing in the resorts must be asked to maintain peace and decorum because loud music and drunken parties can scare the tigers and make them wander into the villages thus becoming easy prey for poachers and angry villagers..State governments need to take up this cause with compassion and concern and extend full cooperation to the wildlife organisations..I pray to God for the safety of our wild life…I am willing to do my bit..

To kill any animal is an offence just equal to killing a person..Nobody should harm any animal as they are not able to speak and express their sorrows..Tiger is our national animal..It’s our duty to take care of it..Being the nationlised people it’s our implied duty to save our national properties..Tigers are not only the animals but also our India’s national honour..And if, even after being the Indian, if any person is careless about his duty towards this, then also he/she should perform his/her duty being a human and with the cause of humanity..One must know what will happen if somebody kills your family member for his business or to earn a bit of money..Then and then only that pain can be felt which the other family members may feel at the time of being killed their family member for ridiculous business..We should protest against the such kind of business..And now as per my views, to save the tigers we should strictly impliment the laws against the persons who kill the tigers and who is doing such kind of business..I am always ready to do the needful and even more than that at anytime..

I am surprized on the figure 1411, the count was same 4 months back and last month two tigers died at Ranthambore National Park , so the correct figure should have been 1409. Would request Aircel and NDTV Management to pay attention on this . I have been at Ranthambore in Jan and within few weeks of my return , the news came that two tigers poisoned by Villagers to avenge their cattles killing.

    Many Thanks;

  27. Mathew Jacob says:

We only have 1411 tigers left and we have a general idea of where most of them are. Is it not possible to have a tracker chip on most of them if not all - and then each sanctuary can on a daily basis monitor their movements .Some sort of sattelite tracking? I am sure it wont work out to be very expensive - and supposing one tiger is seen to be approaching a village on the periphery then the villagers can be alerted. We can even have a daily count . Just a thought actually .

  28. Suryodaya Dubey says:

You will wonder by knowing the fact that the number of tigers left in India is merely 1411 which was 40000 at the start of 20th century. Within the first month of 2010, 3 tiger deaths have been reported. And the government is still waiting for the concerned department to take some decision to save the tigers from extinction. There were 84 tiger deaths in 2009-10 according to Wildlife Protection Society of India which includes both natural and poaching causes. Considering the trend of Tiger deaths, wildlife experts say Tigers would probably extinct within next 20 years. The Tiger reserves will have no tigers in future.Relentless hunting and clearing of habitat for agriculture purpose have been the primary causes of this decline, though demand for tiger skins and parts for “medicinal” purposes has become an increasingly important threat in recent years. The hunters take away every part of the tiger from the scene of crime, leaving behind no evidence, therefore many poaching cases are unnoticed. Even there is no conviction because courts need evidence which poachers do not leave behind.
Every year I used to visit Bandhavgarh to just get a glimpse of Tiger and take some snaps of the beautiful gift of the nature. From last couple of years its appearance in the woods has drastically decreased. Its time for us to join hands to save this beautiful species.

  29. Roshan says:

Atleast the points and the corrupt system will come in front of the people who dont even know what is going on in the forests. And in Karnataka , the is a Tiger reserve named as Bandipur. There is a National Highway that goes through that reserve and we can see deers and elephants walking on that road even when the buses and trucks are passing by with high speed.

So I wud request you all to take this point into consideration. I dont think so that this highway should go through the Tiger Reserve. It is disturbing the wild life and also animals can be killed as they walk on the road unaware of the vechicles etc.

    PLEASE. SAVE MY TIGERS.

  33. dudes i freaked out when i started reading this . i am like the ones who are responsible for this endangering of tigers should be put into prison for life long . dude just 1411 tigers left in India . There were 8 subspecies of tigers from which 3 species are now extinct . Its like our country is loosing a part of its life . SO i think that we Indians should try our very best to preserve our national animal.

    many thanks

Natures nature is something that is beyond our hand.

But something that is in our hand, we can work for it. We can try for it.

For there is a famous saying TRY & TRY UNTILL U WIN.

We can join our hand for a cause that is our pride.

Do not let this happen that will put down our own heads down for our own faults.
Experts say Tigers would probably extinct within next 20 years. Do not let this happen.
Because its we humans who love our nature and TIGERS are a part of it .
So a bit of work could count a lot .

  35. Dear Friends and Fellows,
I truly respect the views of the friends and colleagues, as I am very much attached to nature. However I also feel very sorry for us all. Is it OK to just have a bogs and views, write it read it and forget it. But Where is the media BOSS. Yes the media is resting unless there is another party election. They are fond of MUDDA’s only. Very straight-I feel the media is the right person who can put on the jobs. But But But they never do. There are always busy searching for some one who drops themselves in a pit hole so that they can put their channel live for next couple of days.
Examples are great and never ending in this Country. In Mumbai there is a strict campaign –for collecting fines if someone spits or makes road dirty. But Boss Boss Boss ,who will remove the shit shops from the foot paths .they are not licensed .But they have and electricity-meter, a telephone, water connection as well.

We are Dumb and Deaf, and it’s true if we want to be in peace we should be as its .In Mumbai just go thought Slum Re-Development phase By MHADA.The staying of the peoples is worsened by redeveloping. I saw at vakola, santacruz east. It’s really a mess. People are dumped into a Dark jail like building with no amenities like water-garden.Theeee garden has become a dream for mumbaikars.

How silly is to think of Tigers when our own community is suffering. I feel pity on all of you who instead of thinking of the social, are thinking of tigers-and media they are the Worst in our social Phenomenon.

    Silly Peoples in this world . . . . .

Tigers are an essential feature of India’s unique culture.. They are not only our National animal but also they are one of the most beautiful animals man has ever encountered in history… India is a very weak country when it comes to the protection of animals that are critically endangered. We depend too much on foreign initiatives and incentives.. This is terrible. The tiger IS NOT their national animal so why would they be very interested in saving the noble animal???? (not everyone) Tell me ? What India really needs to do is to actually enforce those Environmental Laws that state that the protection of a Nation’s critically endangered animals should be the duty of every (damn) citizen… which is definitely NOT happening here.. Some of you may think i am being too forceful and decisive. Just think back and tell me.. if we had been decisive in the past two – three decades on Tigers Protection initiatives, campaigns, NGO work etc.. would our country be in this position now??? Can anyone contradict me??? India needs to work very, very hard to establish Tiger sanctuaries – ones that have proper officials in care, not those would sell the Tigers for tempting bribes and poaching offers.. Poaching is illegal but people do it on a large scale anyway.. Why ? because our country is too lax on authority and the courts are too lenient with the said accused… They may argue saying that they too are after all “Human” but really it is too much when Poachers who make roaring trades in China, Japan for selling illegal Tiger products (imagine the horror the Tiger would have felt if it saw its Claws, Teeth, Fur etc, being sold like Walnut brownies or something?) are not given something equal to a death sentence or The Chair… This should be done although many may say that why a death sentence ? Why not prison? I say a death sentence because all works of the Almighty state that it is against the laws of humanity or ‘Dharma’ to kill another living organism.. The bible says that man does not have the right to take the life of anyone… This is true. So why not a death sentence for those poachers and others who have succeed in drastically reducing our Tiger numbers on a large scale… ?? We have to take action now ! IT IS NOW OR NEVER !!!!! Please remember that by your daily, although small contributions, a Tiger somewhere may be getting saved.. Please , Please contribute and enlighten as many people as you can and enroll them in this noble initiative… We simply HAVE to save the Tigers !!!! Please Contribute… They are worth a lot !!!! A Tiger is a living organism of purity… remember that the next time you see anyone buying illegal Tiger products… Please try stopping them, and if possible please start your own campaigns and NGO works at home ! It may save yet another Tiger somewhere !!! Please don’t think that you can’t do anything, thinking of what just one voice is against the atrocities of a world? One voice, One vote.. It all makes a difference for the Greater Good …. !!! Please save the Tigers !!!! I for one, CAN NEVER imagine an India without Tigers… (I would rather die…) Can you envisage such an India ??? Definitely NOT i hope !!!!
